The Walsall

Before the house had a name, it had a leather. This is that leather.

Every belt we make carries a name. Only one carries the name of the place where everything began.

In the early 1990s, before there was a James Aston, before there was even the idea of one, our founder travelled to Walsall, in England's Black Country, where leather has been tanned and curried for centuries. It was there that this house first laid its hands on English Bridle leather, and it was English Bridle leather that taught this house what leather could be.

The work that followed, thirty years of it, across saddlery and sporting goods and finally the pieces that bear our name, all of it descends from that first encounter. This belt is named for that city, in plain gratitude.

The Walsall in Black, buckle hand stitched and fastened from both ends
The Walsall in English Bridle leather, a single 4 mm layer.

English Bridle leather is made the unhurried way: vegetable tanned over weeks, then stuffed through with waxes and oils until the leather is fed to its core.

It was perfected for bridle and harness work, where a strap that fails is not an inconvenience but a danger, and so it is by nature firm, structured and extraordinarily strong.

We cut it in a single layer, a full four millimetres of it. A single layer needs no seam to hold it together, so the stitching sits only where the work demands it: the buckle is fixed by hand stitching, fastened from both ends for strength. There is no filler, no bonding, no second layer hiding a lesser one. What you hold is one honest thickness of the finest strap leather England makes.

Made in the Town of Walsall
The Walsall in Black, English Bridle leather belt, composed still life
Imported solid brass buckle, high shine nickel polish, fixed by hand stitching.

A Bridle leather belt is not at its best on the day you buy it.

The waxes rise and settle with wear, the surface takes on a depth no finish can imitate, and the belt slowly shapes itself to the life it accompanies.

The buckle is imported solid brass, polished to a high nickel shine, and made, like the leather it serves, to be repaired rather than replaced. This is the leather our house was built on, offered the way everything we make is offered: once, properly, and for the rest of a life.

The James Aston Lifetime Warranty

We stand behind the making of every Walsall for the whole of its life. Should the stitching, the buckle, the keeper or the construction ever fail, we repair or restore it. The leather is vegetable tanned and is meant to age. It will deepen into a patina that belongs to you alone. That is not wear. That is the point.

Why no addition is needed. You are measuring a belt worn with clothing, so that allowance is already in the number. Your James Aston belt arrives with the middle hole at your ordered size, two holes either side.

Keep your belt clean and well conditioned. Wipe it gently with a soft dry cloth to lift dust, and from time to time work in a little neutral leather conditioner to feed the leather and protect its surface. Keep it dry, store it with room to breathe, and away from prolonged damp and direct heat. Cared for in this way, the vegetable tanned leather deepens into a patina that becomes, over the years, unmistakably your own.
