Vegetable Tanning
Vegetable tanning is the oldest way to turn a raw hide into lasting leather, using tannins drawn from tree bark and other plant matter rather than the chemicals of modern chrome tanning. It is slow, often many weeks, and it rewards patience: the leather it makes is firm, full of character, and alive to age. Where chrome-tanned leather stays as it began, vegetable tanned leather darkens, softens and takes on a patina that belongs to its owner alone. Every James Aston piece is 100% vegetable tanned. It is the foundation of everything the House makes and the reason a James Aston piece is made once and carried for a lifetime.
