The Leone
Italian Full Grain Vachetta. Tuscan Leather District. Tan. 35mm.
Lifetime Warranty · Hand finished in Kanpur
Leone means lion. Not the roar of it, but the quiet of it, the stillness of something that has no need to prove its strength. The Leone is named for that, and carries it without a sound.
The Leone is crafted in Italian Full Grain Vegetable Tanned Vachetta leather, drawn from the Tuscan Leather District of Italy, in a warm and natural Tan. A single layer, hand-stitched along its length, the same leather from the first thread to the last.
At 35mm, it carries the presence of a proper dress belt, composed beneath a tailored jacket and certain of itself with a suit. The buckle, an H-frame in a brushed nickel finish, is precisely proportioned for the width and the character of the leather. There is no second material and no lining. The Leone is confident enough in its own leather to need nothing else. This is not a purchase. It is a belt chosen once, and carried for years.
It begins in the Tuscan Leather District, the corridor between Florence and Pisa along the banks of the Arno, where the tradition of vegetable tanning has been practised without interruption since the thirteenth century. Natural tannins are drawn from the bark of chestnut, quebracho and mimosa, and the hides are moved slowly through progressive concentrations of tannin over weeks of patient immersion. No acceleration, no shortcuts, only time and craft producing a leather fundamentally different from anything the industrial process can offer.

This belt is cut from Vachetta, a natural vegetable tanned leather from Tuscany. It is tanned slowly, with plant extracts in place of chemicals, in a tradition held for generations. Left close to its natural state, it deepens in tone and takes its patina with wear, so the leather becomes a quiet record of the years it is carried. Every Vachetta hide carries the guarantee of the Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale, the mark that certifies genuine vegetable tanned leather made in Tuscany.

The leather for The Leone is Milled, and the difference is one you feel before you can name it. The milling process tumbles the vegetable tanned hide in large drums until the fibres relax and the surface takes on a softness and roundness that no other finishing method can replicate. It yields gently when you hold it. It carries light differently at different angles. Over years of wear it develops a patina that is layered, personal and irreversibly its own, the visible record of a life lived alongside it.
The Leone is built from a single layer of the Milled leather, with no separate lining introduced. The grain side faces the world, the flesh side of the same leather faces the body, and the two edges are held by a line of stitching worked by hand along the length of the belt. Hand-stitching is slower and more demanding than the machine. It is also stronger, and it leaves a line that is unmistakably human. This is the assurance of a maker who knows that a leather of this quality needs nothing added to it.
The colourway is Tan, a warm and open brown that wears with ease and grows more characterful with time. As a Vachetta leather, left close to its natural state, it deepens in tone with the years and the light, taking colour from the wear it is given. The Tan you receive is the beginning of it. The Tan you carry, a decade from now, will belong to you alone.

The buckle is an H-frame, imported and finished in brushed nickel, a finish that holds its composure rather than catching the eye. It is proportioned for the 35mm width with intent, neither heavy nor slight, and the James Aston name is carried on the bar. The billet tip is pointed and finished with the embossed JA mark within its stitched outline. Nothing is decorative for its own sake. Every part is present because the belt is not complete without it.
Leone means lion, and the belt wears the name without ceremony. There is no display in it, only the certainty of something made properly and meant to last. It belongs to the man who has stopped reaching for attention, because he has understood that the surest strength is the kind that keeps its voice down. Crafted once, and carried for a lifetime.
We stand behind the making of every Leone for the whole of its life. Should the stitching, the buckle, the keeper or the construction ever fail, we repair or restore it. The leather is vegetable tanned and is meant to age. It will deepen and soften into a patina that belongs to you alone. That is not wear. That is the point.
