The Vincenzo

The Vincenzo is crafted in Italian Vegetable Tanned leather, drawn from the Tuscan Leather District of Italy, its surface worked with a crocodile-grain emboss and lined in vegetable tanned nubuck in natural honey. The grain is not exotic skin; it is the work of the craftsman, a crocodile pattern pressed into fine full grain leather by hand, all the character of the look with all the integrity of a single honest hide.

At 35mm, it is a dress belt with presence, the embossed surface catching the light in a way a plain belt never will. The buckle and the solid brass Chicago screw that secures it complete a belt made to be noticed quietly. This is not a purchase. It is a decision made once, for a lifetime.

It begins in the Tuscan Leather District, the corridor between Florence and Pisa along the banks of the Arno, where the tradition of vegetable tanning has been practised without interruption since the thirteenth century. Natural tannins are drawn from the bark of chestnut, quebracho and mimosa, and the hides are moved slowly through progressive concentrations of tannin over weeks of patient immersion. No acceleration, no shortcuts, only time and craft producing a leather fundamentally different from anything the industrial process can offer.

The crocodile pattern is embossed, pressed into the surface of the leather under heat and pressure to raise the distinctive scaled relief of crocodile skin. This is a deliberate choice, and an honest one. No exotic animal is used. What you carry is fine Italian vegetable tanned leather, worked by skilled hands to wear the look of crocodile while remaining true to itself, durable, full of character, and made to age as good leather should. The artistry is in the working, and it shows along the whole length of the belt.

The lining is vegetable tanned nubuck in natural honey, the same considered choice as the Cosimo. Nubuck has a softer hand than standard leather lining, so the Vincenzo sits against the trouser with a quiet, composed drape, and the warm honey tone against the embossed exterior is the mark of a maker who thinks about the belt in the hand as much as on the waist.

The stitching is feather-edged, set close to the edge in a contrasting thread that traces the line of the belt and marks its boundary with precision. The buckle is precisely proportioned for the belt's width, with the James Aston name engraved on the connecting bar, and a solid brass Chicago screw at the keeper matched to it. The Vincenzo in Cognac is finished with gold hardware, warm against the rich tone of the leather. The billet tip is pointed, finished with the embossed JA mark within its stitched outline.

Vincenzo means the conqueror, and the belt is made to that measure. It is the most expressive belt in the dress collection, the embossed grain giving it a richness and a presence the plainer belts hold in reserve.
