The Federico
Italian Full Grain Vachetta. Tuscan Leather District. Australian Nut. 35mm.
Lifetime Warranty · Hand finished in Kanpur
Federico means peaceful ruler. The name is well chosen. This is a belt that governs the whole of what a man wears without once asking to be noticed.
The Federico is crafted in Italian Full Grain Vegetable Tanned Vachetta leather, drawn from the Tuscan Leather District of Italy. The grain side faces the world; the same leather, turned, faces the body. No separate lining, no second material, one full grain hide from the first thread to the last, confident enough in its own character to need nothing else.
At 35mm, it sits on the trouser with the unforced authority its name suggests, refined enough for formal dress, substantial enough to hold its form through years of wear. The buckle, in a brushed nickel finish, and the solid brass Chicago screw that secures it, complete a belt of quiet, considered correctness. This is not a purchase. It is a decision made once, for a lifetime.
It begins in the Tuscan Leather District, the corridor between Florence and Pisa along the banks of the Arno, where the tradition of vegetable tanning has been practised without interruption since the thirteenth century. Natural tannins are drawn from the bark of chestnut, quebracho and mimosa, and the hides are moved slowly through progressive concentrations of tannin over weeks of patient immersion. No acceleration, no shortcuts, only time and craft producing a leather fundamentally different from anything the industrial process can offer.

This belt is cut from Vachetta, a natural vegetable tanned leather from Tuscany. It is tanned slowly, with plant extracts in place of chemicals, in a tradition held for generations. Left close to its natural state, it deepens in tone and takes its patina with wear, so the leather becomes a quiet record of the years it is carried. Every Vachetta hide carries the guarantee of the Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale, the mark that certifies genuine vegetable tanned leather made in Tuscany.

The leather is full grain, the outermost layer of the hide, the strongest and the most honest. Nothing is sanded away, nothing corrected or stamped over. The grain you see is the grain the hide carried, with all its natural character. A full grain leather cannot conceal a flaw, which is precisely why only the finest hides are chosen for it. It is the most demanding leather to work, and the most rewarding to own.
Each Federico is finished in a single, considered tone, drawn into the leather rather than laid upon it. Over years of wear that colour deepens and softens, taking on a patina that records the life lived alongside it, until the belt belongs unmistakably to its owner and to no one else.

What gives the Federico its quiet distinction is the confidence of its construction. The grain side faces outward, carrying the full character of the leather. The flesh side of the same hide faces the body. There is no separate lining, no second material introduced, the same Italian Full Grain leather from edge to edge. This is not simplicity for its own sake. It is the assurance of a maker who knows that a leather of this quality asks for nothing to be added to it.
The stitching is feather-edged, set close to the edge in a contrasting thread that traces the line of the belt and marks its boundary with precision. The prong platform is covered in the same leather, a small refinement many makers leave bare. The buckle is precisely proportioned for the belt's width, in a brushed nickel finish, with the James Aston name engraved on the connecting bar, and the solid brass Chicago screw at the keeper is matched to it. The billet tip is pointed, finished with the embossed JA mark within its stitched outline.
Federico means peaceful ruler, and the belt is true to its name. It is worn with tailored trousers and a considered shirt, and it governs the whole without once raising its voice. It belongs to the man who has understood that authority, in dress as in life, is quietest in those most certain of it.
We stand behind the making of every Federico for the whole of its life. Should the stitching, the buckle, the keeper or the construction ever fail, we repair or restore it. The leather is vegetable tanned and is meant to age. It will deepen and soften into a patina that belongs to you alone. That is not wear. That is the point.
