The Eduardo

Named for the defender. Made to deserve the name.

Eduardo is an old name, and like most old names it was not chosen for its sound. It means the wealthy defender, the guardian of what a man holds.

We found that fitting. A belt is the quietest thing a man puts on in the morning and the one thing he trusts without thinking for the whole of the day. It asks for no attention and accepts no failure.

If any object in a man's wardrobe has earned the name of defender, it is this one, and so this one carries it.

The Eduardo in Tan, machine stitched edges with buckle fastened by hand stitching
The Eduardo in Spanish milled leather, stitched from tip to buckle.

The Eduardo is cut from Spanish milled leather, vegetable tanned in the old way and then tumbled in the finishing, so that the grain rises and settles into its relaxed, pebbled character.

Milling gives the leather what a drum gives a hide: suppleness without any loss of strength. Where our dress leathers stand formal and smooth, this one sits easy, which is exactly its purpose.

Spain is the third origin in the house's vocabulary, beside Italy and England, and the rule that governs all three governs here: the leather dictates the product. This is leather for every day, and so this is a belt for every day.

Cut from a Single Spanish Hide
The Eduardo in Tan, Spanish full grain milled leather belt, composed still life
Imported buckle in nickel, fastened by hand stitching.

A single honest layer of leather, cut at a confident 35 millimetres and stitched by machine along both edges from tip to buckle, an even lockstitch the whole length of the belt.

Both ends are then fastened at the buckle by hand, where strength matters most. On a working belt, stitching is not ornament; it is structure, and each stitch here is set the way that serves it best: the machine for the length, the hand for the hold.

The buckle is imported, finished in nickel, brushed on the Black, polished on the Tan, chosen to shrug off the knocks of a working week. Worn daily, the milled grain deepens and the belt takes the shape of its owner's life, which is the only tailoring that matters. It carries the James Aston Lifetime Warranty, because a defender that cannot be trusted for life is not one.

The James Aston Lifetime Warranty

We stand behind the making of every Eduardo for the whole of its life. Should the stitching, the buckle, the keeper or the construction ever fail, we repair or restore it. The leather is vegetable tanned and is meant to age. The milled grain will deepen into a patina that belongs to you alone. That is not wear. That is the point.

Why no addition is needed. You are measuring a belt worn with clothing, so that allowance is already in the number. Your James Aston belt arrives with the middle hole at your ordered size, two holes either side.

Keep your belt clean and well conditioned. Wipe it gently with a soft dry cloth to lift dust, and from time to time work in a little neutral leather conditioner to feed the leather and protect its surface. Keep it dry, store it with room to breathe, and away from prolonged damp and direct heat. Cared for in this way, the vegetable tanned leather deepens into a patina that becomes, over the years, unmistakably your own.
